I was 6 years old when I started my inner work and empowerment journey. That’s right. That little nugget you see in the photo, she was already taking on a whole heap of programming that wasn’t aligned with her truest self. I have memories from first grade where I absolutely beat myself to a pulp over not learning fast enough, making mistakes, and feeling SO. MANY. FEELINGS. AND. SENSITIVITIES. TO ENERGY. Thankfully my teacher and parents agreed that group therapy and individual therapy would be worth a shot in combating my low self esteem.
Throughout my childhood and early adulthood, I continued to learn new techniques and tools for me to use while experiencing anxiety and depression, two diagnoses given to me at the time. I didn’t stick with one type of modality. I tried a variety of different forms of therapy and medication to attempt to curb my symptoms. Many symptoms, as I understand them now, had to do with me choosing to suppress my authentic self/soul expression. Turns out, if you really, REALLY ignore who you are, it can lead to some pretty gnarly, yet illuminating experiences.
In my twenties I moved across the country to various locations to follow my excitement. Chicago, Florida, San Francisco were all home for periods of time as I started to listen to more of me. What do I want?! I started a non-profit, created a quarterly, donation based haircut event for the queer community, hosted playful gatherings, and worked with many entrepreneurs all while continuing to explore myself through a variety of healing tools. I took a coaching course after graduating from college and found I had a passion for community and connecting authentically with others.
At one point I pivoted and attempted to live a more traditional life. I bought a house, got married, and started working for a university. Stability! What else could I want? You know what I found? A lot. My true self could want a lot more. Because, once again, I found myself choosing to suppress my authenticity and it lead me to taking a realllllllllly hard look at myself.
Ok Whit… what’s YOUR truth? Not someone else’s. What’s yours? It’s funny how a question can cause major life shifts if you decide to dig deep enough :) I ended up divorcing my ex-wife, selling the house, quitting my university job and starting my own business all within the same year. Talk about a life shakeup! I no longer identify with any of the diagnosis given to me when I was younger nor am I on any medications. I experience the full spectrum of emotions and tune into energy that I have been so sensitive to my whole life, but I do so from an empowered and heart-centered space.
The Whit you see today is a culmination of ALL of these life experiences and more, 30+ years of inner work that continues, courses, masterclasses, activations of learning and practicing, and most of all, an unwavering commitment to my authenticity and soul expression through this human, Whit body.
I know quite intimately what it feels like to reject self AND I know what it feels like to embody self love and expression of self. Magic and all.
