Playing Tetris
This blog post is going to be a bit more on the technical side of things. How the heck do I fit all of my belongings into my car for my adventure?! Let’s dive into my process!
I’m a pretty visual, hands on type thinker and creator. When I’m building something or planning, it helps tremendously to not only visualize it in my head, but to draw it out on paper or physically create a model of what I’m thinking ahead of time. That way I can find things that might not quite work for me before I get to the main event.
So! With this adventure, packing my car has been on my mind for awhile. I had no doubts that everything would fit, I mainly wanted to think through the WHAT and HOW so I could easily get to certain items efficiently while on the road if needed. The WHAT aspect has been fleshed out for months now. I purchased a car emergency kit and first aid kit to have on hand and I knew those would go directly behind my driver’s seat on the floor with nothing on top of them. Easy access! I also decided to purchase one of those back-of-the-seat organizers that you typically see parents using with kiddos. I knew I’d want this on the passenger seat facing forward so I could easily organize snacks, drinks, chargers, flashlights, etc. But what about the rest of my stuff??
Most of my things would end up in plastic tubs and suitcases, but I wasn’t sure how it would all fit in my car. So! I decided to measure the dimensions of my Subaru from my front seats to the rear door. Then I taped it out in my room and started playing Tetris.
The bins and big suitcase with things I knew I wouldn’t need while driving would go into my car first and the small suitcase with clothes for a few days + bins with food and laptop would go closer to the rear door. Brilliant, yes? haha I think so!
Now, when it came to the day when I actually packed it all in, were there some tweaks that needed to be made to fit it all in, yes. Yes, there were. Cars aren’t perfect rectangle boxes so some of my planning needed to be adjusted, which was easy enough and got remedied really quick! As you can see from the photo above, I was super stoked when I could close all my doors and everything was ready to go! *Pro tip: if your car has seat weight sensors, buckle your passenger seat seatbelt BEFORE you load in your items :)
AND I’M OFF!
Actually, by the time you’re reading this blog post, I’ll have been on my adventure for a couple of weeks. I can’t wait to share what I experience and so many beautiful photos!
With joy and love, Whit
